Air cooled racer

This is not exactly Porsche related.  However, it is an interesting story posted on BAT’s websitea bout and Eastern Buckeye Region PCA members little old horizontally opposed air cooler race car.  Full write up with pictures can be found at the following:  http://bringatrailer.com/2014/01/16/half-bathtub-myron-vs-1954-panhard-junior/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=half-bathtub-myron-vs-1954-panhard-junior

Half Bathtub: Myron V’s 1954 Panhard Junior Race Car

This 1954 Panhard Junior (chassis 856250) is one of only just over 4,000 examples built between 1952 and 1956, and was extensively raced throughout the 80′s and 90′s. BaT regular Myron V. purchased the car 17 years ago, two years after its last race, and despite his best intentions has not had the opportunity to get it running again–understandable when you’re the steward of approximately half the other orphaned, odd-ball sports cars in the Midwest. It’s rust free and includes many parts that would allow its return to a more standard spec if so desired. Find it here on eBay in Akron, Ohio with reserve not met.

These cars were based on Dyna X frames, but with their own custom steel bodywork. This car has no sheet metal modifications, and the Brooklands screens and Recaro race seat it currently wears are joined in the sale by a factory windshield and frame, top frame, dash and gauges. It’s a neat looking little car, somewhat reminiscent of an early 356 Speedster from the rear. The black Ohio plate with 1954 markings is a nice touch, and we like how it sits behind a faired-in enclosure.

Behind rearward opening doors the interior has been largely stripped for competition use but seems quite solid if a bit dusty. We’d like to see the car make a return to a factory look, but would have no qualms about enjoying it and its rich race history as-is while waiting to locate all missing trim pieces. An SVRA logbook dating back to the early 80′s is included, and we’re sure it’d be a riot to race–or at least participate in as a moving chicane.

From what we gather these car’s frames may have been donated by the earlier Dyna X, but their engines came from the much more advanced and technically interesting Dyna Z model. At 851 CC, the little air-cooled, horizontally opposed twin uses roller main and big end rod bearings, hollow aluminum push rods with hardened steel tips, and other cool engineering details. Though not currently running, the engine turns fine and should deliver somewhere between 50 and 60 HP to the front wheels through a 4-speed manual once brought back to life. Brakes are functional, and an OEM fuel tank is included along with the fuel cell the car currently runs.

Whether it ends up recommissioned for competition, road, or a mix of both, the new owner is sure to have a lot of fun with this compelling little weirdo. Like all vintage French cars, it’s not for everyone, but we’re solidly in the appreciation camp if for the unusual but advanced engineering it contains alone.

Zone 4 DE Instructor of the Year 2013

Zone 4 DE Instructor Award

Congratulations to Alex Soduk from Eastern Buckeye Region, winner of the Toyo Tires® Drivers Education Zone Instructor Award for 2013. As part of the inaugural year of sponsorship of the PCA DE Program, Toyo Tires® is awarding a set of tires to one of our instructors in each of twelve Zones as recognition of their efforts to further this valuable segment of PCA. Each region in Zone 4 nominated an instructor to be entered into a drawing at PCA National Headquarters, and Alex’ name was drawn as this year’s winner.

Alex, having been around PCA events and the track throughout his childhood, could not wait to participate in his first driver’s education event in 1999 at the ripe age of 18. That April ARPCA event was the start to a very exciting hobby that he has been actively involved with since. As a student, he always used his dad’s black 944 and loved the thrill of catching and passing cars that should have been much faster. After becoming an instructor in 2002, he moved up to a red 944 turbo and began traveling to more tracks throughout the zone with both PCA and NASA. In 2006 he built his current track car, the white #6 Spec Miata, and began racing in addition to instructing and Autocrossing with EBR and the IRAC series. He completed the PCA National Instructor training in 2005 and mainly runs with EBR, NOR, and MOR PCA regions and NASA Great Lakes. He has held the positions of president, membership chairman, chief driving instructor, webmaster and autocross timing chairman with the Eastern Buckeye Region. His wife, Meredith, and Alex enjoy social events, rallies and driving tours together and have made many great friends through the Club. They both love getting new members involved in the club and try to get them all to try a driver’s education event.

Congratulations again to Alex and many thanks to all of our hard-working DE instructors throughout Zone 4- we have an excellent program because of your dedication.

Ron Carr- Zone 4 Representative (2010-2013)

Make a point to give Alex a pat on the back when you see him at an event or better yet sign up for a DE for the experience firsthand.

Boxster Technical Seminar

Thanks to those who made it out to the Boxster oil change / maintenance Tech Seminar last weekend.  Hopefully it was as informative as it was fun.

In addition to finding out how easy an oil change is on a modern Porsche, participants were presented with brake and suspension inspection tips, engine and cabin air filter changes, and light was shined on the mysterious whereabouts of the Boxster engine. Just getting startedOn to the brakesIn here somewhere?

2013 Spring Rally

EBR’s first rally of the season was held on Saturday April 6th.  It was dubbed the “Frackin” rally because it wound across some beautiful roads in Stark and Carroll Counties that are experiencing a boom in oil and natural gas production.  There was a great line-up of cars with just under forty members participating.

In addition to the great roads, everyone was treated to some beautiful early spring weather and great food.  After driving a one and a half hour, well-planned route with an mix of relaxed driving and challenging questions, the drive concluded at the Hart Mansion in Minerva.  This fine restaurant is set in a historic home originally constructed in 1869 that features Italianate Architecture that was popular in Victorian America.

Congratulations to the following rally winners:  The brother and sister team of Alex Soduk and Stephanie  finished in first place with a perfect score.  Second place went to Walt and Julie Soduk.  Third place went to new members Harry Bindreiter and Denise.  Also a special Thank You goes out to Joe and Kelly Bernstein for planning a great event.
